The Castel Mar (Châteaumar) estate dates back to the 11th century. Since the beginning, over countless generations, the vines at Domaine de Châteaumar have been cultivated without any pesticides or herbicides by father and son in the Souret family. Today, Jean-Felix and Frederic Souret manage the vineyard, still maintaining the greatest respect for nature.

The estate is located 9 km from Orange, in the heart of the Côtes-du-Rhône AOP. The vineyards include 12 acres in the prestigious northern plain of Châteauneuf-du-Pape on red clay with large round galets, and 25 adjacent acres in Côtes-du-Rhône on stony clay-limestone soils. The vineyard is naturally established from several noble varieties of the Southern Rhône, principally Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Farming is organic, but uncertified. The soil is turned several times during the year which allows the vines to draw a wonderful energy from deep down to create beautifully formed grapes. Once matured, the grapes are hand-harvested, selected, and sorted.

Wines from Domaine de Châteaumar

Domaine de Châteaumar Châteauneuf-du-Pape Secret de Nos Vignes

Blend: 70% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre
Aging: 8 months in French oak demi-muids, then 4 more months in concrete tanks

This more traditionally-styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape features pronounced fruit and spice aromas with hints of smoke, anise, and earth. The palate is rich with dark berry, roasted plum, hints of wild herbs, and dark chocolate. The finish is redolent with resurgent herbs, plum, and anise, incorporating old leather, dried violets, and dry-cured olives as it lingers. Drinks beautifully now or can cellar up to 5-8 years. Very limited production.

Domaine de Châteaumar Côtes-du-Rhône Cuvée Bastien

Blend: 100% Grenache
Aging: 8 to 10 months in concrete tanks

Cuvée Bastien, named after the winemakers’ son, is made from a single vineyard of 50+ year-old vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Rich, fruity, and elegant, with classic Châteauneuf Grenache character, but with a ripe and open-knit structure that makes its black cherry, spice, graphite and sweet earth accessible now.

Domaine de Châteaumar Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé Perle de Rosé

Blend: 90% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre
Aging: 6 months in stainless steel tanks

This wine’s intense pink rose petal color is slightly darker and more robust than the rosés of nearby Provence, which is indicative of the wine itself. A nose of macerated strawberries, raspberries, and peaches, with a faint earthy and peppery base, comes together with a fresh clay minerality on the soft, round, and slightly weighty palate. Well-integrated ripe cherry skin acidity is key in retaining this sturdy rosé’s balance and freshness, making it a fine companion for richer foods like grilled lamb loin chops, burgers, spicy sausages, fresh tomato sauced pastas, and mezze platters.

Domaine de Châteaumar Côtes-du-Rhône Cuvée Vincent

Blend: 100% Syrah
Aging: 8 to 10 months in concrete tanks

Cuvée Vincent is made from 50+ year-old vines growing on two parcels bordering Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its unusual composition of 100% Syrah imbues it with the smoky aromas and meaty, savory flavors more associated with the legendary wines of Hermitage and Côte-Rotie in the Northern Rhône, but with the generosity of tart cherry, blackberry, blueberry, and dark spices one expects from the more lush Southern Rhône. A rich and complex wine unlike any other Côtes-du-Rhône you’ll find, and one that will elevate a wood-grilled ribeye, roast duck, braised lamb shanks, game, or any hearty dish to sublimity.

Domaine de Châteaumar Cuvée Amandine

Blend: 95% Viognier 5% Grenache Blanc

Terrior: Clay-limestone soil with gravel.

Farming: High Environmental Value (HVE) 3 Certified

Aging: 5 months in stainless steel tanks

Castel Chateaumar estate, dates back to Roman times and has been stewarded by the Souret Family for three generations. Bright yellow hue, with aromas of ripe white and exotic fruits with floral notes. On palate this wine is round, fruity, with a delightful freshness that lingers around aromas of orchard fruits. Enjoy by itself or with all your light fare.
